## Consistency means recognizability through change.

Character consistency in AI video does not mean repeating one frozen portrait. The person should remain recognizable when the camera moves, the expression changes, the body enters frame or the light becomes harder. Identity must survive change without turning every shot into the same composition.

The common mistake is to treat this as a magic prompt phrase. It is a reference and review problem. A useful system defines the identity, separates it from the shot, approves a stable starting frame and checks visible drift before that drift reaches the edit.

## 1. Write an identity brief before a visual prompt.

Describe features that can be observed and checked: face shape, proportions, age range, skin texture, hairline, hair length, posture and one or two stable details. Keep wardrobe in a separate block. Avoid mood words as identity definitions; cinematic, elegant or mysterious do not tell a reviewer whether the same person returned.

If the character is based on a real person, obtain permission for the intended use before building the reference pack. Record which images can guide generation, which outputs may be published and how long the likeness may be used. A platform disclosure does not replace consent.

## 2. Build a compact character sheet.

Use a front view, both profiles, a three-quarter portrait, a full-body view and a small expression range in the same neutral light. Add the approved wardrobe, accessories and hair state. The goal is not a beautiful poster; it is enough visual evidence to recognize what changed.

Adobe's published Sundance workflow describes a consented likeness card made from full-body angles and close expression references. That production detail is useful because it separates casting from shot design. Once the identity is locked, locations, lenses and actions can vary without redefining the person each time.

VISUAL EXAMPLE

### A reference gives you something to compare.

Front, three-quarter and profile views reveal different identity cues. These three portraits illustrate the principle; a working pack also needs the opposite profile, body views and expressions.

- Compare the hairline, nose and jaw shape.

- Keep wardrobe separate from facial identity.

- Record the reference version used for each shot.

## 3. Separate identity, styling and shot direction.

Keep three short blocks instead of one expanding paragraph. The identity block remains stable. The styling block controls wardrobe, hair and makeup for a scene. The shot block describes framing, lens, camera angle, action, environment and light. When something drifts, this separation reveals which layer needs correction.

Do the same for the environment. Record the room geometry, practical light positions, time of day and recurring materials. A consistent face in an impossible sequence of changing doors, windows and shadows still breaks the film's continuity.

## 4. Approve one anchor frame per shot.

Before animation, approve a still that holds identity, pose, camera and environment. Compare it beside the character sheet and the previous shot. This anchor becomes both the input for motion and the evidence for review. If the still is wrong, motion will make the error more expensive to diagnose.

Give each shot one readable action and one camera instruction. Complex actions over longer durations remain difficult for generative systems, so coverage should be designed around clear beats. A reaction close-up, a walking insert and a hand detail are easier to direct and edit than a single shot asked to perform the whole scene.

## 5. Score drift on visible axes.

Review identity, hair, wardrobe, body proportion, light and environment separately. Use a simple pass, repair or replace decision for each axis. Watch the first and last frame, then the full motion at normal speed. Some shots begin correctly and lose identity only during a turn or occlusion.

Repair the earliest broken input. A stronger anchor, a simpler action, a closer crop or conventional compositing may solve the problem. Repeating the same generation with more adjectives is rarely a review strategy. Keep rejected outputs and the reason for rejection so the team does not repeat the same failure.

VISUAL EXAMPLE

### The face can match while the scene drifts.

The right image deliberately changes hair length and jacket color. A recognizable face alone cannot pass a shot whose styling breaks the surrounding sequence.

- Left: the reference styling.

- Right: two intentional continuity errors.

- Action: repair hair and wardrobe before approving motion.

## 6. Know what consistency cannot solve.

A stable face cannot rescue weak casting, an unclear role or a film with no emotional progression. Continuity serves the story; it is not the story. The character should still make a readable choice, create tension or change the viewer's understanding of the product.

For campaign work, build a reusable reference pack and continuity ledger as delivery assets. They shorten later decisions and make new formats safer, but every new scene still needs art direction and review. Consistency is achieved through recorded decisions, not entrusted to a model setting.
